A few weeks ago Freestyle Espresso was recommended to me and I have to admit I didn't even know it existed until then. It's hidden away off Coventry Street in South Melbourne and can get easily overlooked with Chez Dré and Giddiup just around the corner.
I had been nagging L that I really wanted to go and last Sunday was finally the day! We were greeted by a very friendly waitress and had a choice of either sitting inside or out. We chose one of the tables outside in the mini courtyard which is nice and sheltered.
We ordered our coffees and perused our menues. Lots of really good things on there, the basics like eggs your way on toast and also avocado with poached egg on toast but also some delicious alternatives like potato, leek and chive croquettes with smoked salmon and a poached egg. I was deeply disappointed when I heard that they had run out of the croquettes but had already a back up order ready and went for the grilled mushrooms, haloumi and dukkah with a poached egg.
L chose the corn cakes with avocado and bacon and also ordered a side of beef and basil chipolatas.
Unfortunately we had to move inside at this point as the crazy Melbourne weather was showing it's face again and it started raining.
The inside had two large communal tables and a couple of armchairs that looked very inviting. I'd like to come back one afternoon, order a cup of tea and one of their homemade treats and just read a book.
When our breakfast arrived we were both very happy with our choices. The dukkah went really well with the mushrooms and haloumi and a squeeze of lemon pulled the whole dish together nicely.
L's corn cakes were nice and fluffy and the side of sausages were delicious!
We will definitely be back soon, I really want to try those croquettes and the food and service were great.
