Hidden on the same street as Zumbo, not far from Chapel Street and Toorak Road sits Two Birds one Stone. It's owned by the same guys as Top Paddock in Richmond and The Kettle Black in South Melbourne.
Just because it's not on one of the main streets doesn't mean it doesn't get busy, on the weekends there is the usual wait and even for mid-week breakfasts and lunches it gets busy.
As I work close by I've been here a few times. For breakfast, lunch and many, many times for coffee and sometimes a sneaky morning muffin.
Two Birds One Stone serve all day breakfast and lunch after 11:30. The menu is not easy for someone who is indecisive (like me).
They offer the usual suspects like Avo Smash and Eggs Benedict. However some of the classics come with a twist, like the twice cooked marmelade French Toast with oranges and vanilla panna cotta.
I had my eyes on this dish too, as you know I love mushrooms. According to my friend it was as delicious as it looks. I'll definitely have that one morning too. The lunch menu usually consists of a few salads, sandwiches, baguettes and some specials. For a quick lunch I usually go for a baguette, like this one with chicken, brie, pesto and rocket.
The other day one of the specials were these pumpkin & gorgonzola fritters served with a fried egg and a rocket, prosciutto and pear salad.
It was one of the best lunches I've had in a while. I thought maybe the gorgonzola might be a bit overpowering but the fritters were absolutely amazing. The pumpkin made them very creamy on the inside and the gorgonzola added a little bit of a sharpness to them.
A regular on the lunch menu is the leek & potato roesti with house smoked salmon, soft herb salad, pickled cucumber & a poached egg.
Coming from Germany I've grown up with roesti. This one was very nice and crunchy on the outside. The herb salad that came with it was surprisingly delicious. I would never have thought to combine mint with a roesti and smoked salmon.
As I'm lucky enough to work super close by I know I'll be back many more times.
