A few weeks ago, together with a friend, I ran my first half marathon. I have been wanting to run a half marathon for a while and set myself a goal. Run one before my 30th birthday. I signed up for the Geelong Half Marathon and started training. And I did it! There was pain but I was so happy crossing that finish line at the end.
After a quick shower at my friend Em's we went out for breakfast to the Waterfront Kitchen. The café, which is part of Deakin University, is located in a big bright room, with plenty of outdoor seating overlooking the water.
The service was very friendly and fast. We placed our orders and talked through the race, while enjoying the view, our coffees and a refreshing juice.
My friend Pete, who ran with me got the Waterfront kitchen big breakfast, which consisted of two free range eggs, toasted sourdough, grilled bacon,
sausages, baked beans, sautéed spinach, tomato relish. A breakfast for champions with all the essentials anyone could need after a big night our or in this case a big race!
Em chose the grilled sweet corn fritters with smashed avocado, two poached free range eggs, sour cream, chive oil and fresh herbs. They weren't quite what she expected but more like savoury pancakes with sweet corn in the batter, but still very nice. The fritters were a decent size with a good serve of avocado. Who doesn't love avo with their breakfast?!
L had come along as my personal motivator and biggest supporter. He ordered the free range fried eggs on sourdough toast with a side of bacon and a hashbrown. Such a simple breakfast but he is still raving about it.
SJ, who was also an integral part of our cheering squad, ordered the warm toasted waffles with strawberries, raspberries and vanilla bean syrup double cream. They looked super delicious when they came out! Thick and fragrant with berries dotted around them. I got food envy!
But my breakfast bruschetta which consisted of toasted sourdough, smashed avocado, slow roasted tomatoes,
rocket, marinated feta and balsamic reduction was actually the perfect post-run choice. The combination of the sweetness of the sundried tomatoes went to well with the creamy avo and feta. It was delicious!
Geelong is not far behind Melbourne when it comes to the café scene, there are so many more places we want to check out and it's such a nice day trip!
